Look up remaining life expectancy at any age

Select an attained age and source column below. The primary result is remaining life expectancy: the average additional years in a hypothetical population that has already survived to that age, if the 2024 mortality schedule stayed fixed. The expected attained age is simply the selected age plus those remaining years.

Selected age 65, total population: 19.7 remaining years; conditional life-table survival to age 90, 30.7 percent.

At age 65, the 2024 table reports an average of 19.7 remaining years for the total population.

Remaining years decline with attained age, while expected attained age is the selected age plus the remaining-years value.

Median and one-in-four ages are the first whole ages where the survivor count is at or below 50% and 25% of those alive at the selected age. Time conversions use 365.2425 days per year. View the CDC source.

Direct answers at landmark ages

In the total-population table, remaining life expectancy is 41.0 years at age 40, 32.0 at 50, 23.6 at 60, 19.7 at 65, 16.0 at 70, 9.4 at 80, and 4.6 at 90. Adding the starting age gives expected attained ages of 81.0, 82.0, 83.6, 84.7, 86.0, 89.4, and 94.6 respectively.

Life expectancy at age 65 is not 79.0 minus 65. The at-birth value includes deaths before 65. The age-65 value is recalculated among the people in the life table who reached 65.

This survivor conditioning is why expected attained age rises as the selected age rises. It is not a promise of extra life; it is a different denominator. The companion explainer on life expectancy at age 40 versus at birth walks through that distinction.

What “chance of reaching 90” means here

The source table starts with 100,000 hypothetical births and reports how many survive to every exact age. Conditional survival from a current age to a later target is calculated as survivors at the target divided by survivors at the current age. Under 2024 period rates, 84,133 of 100,000 reach age 65 and 25,811 reach age 90. Dividing those values gives 30.7% conditional survival from 65 to 90 for the total-population column.

Conditional life-table survivalsurvivors at target age ÷ survivors at current age × 100

The explorer also shows the first age at which half and one quarter of the selected-age survivors remain. Those are points on the life-table survivor curve—not confidence bounds around a person’s lifespan. For fixed milestones and every starting age, use the dedicated survival-to-80, 90, and 100 calculator.

Complete remaining-life-expectancy table, ages 0–100

The full table keeps every source age row available to readers and search engines rather than hiding the values behind a chart. Displayed values are rounded to one decimal place; downloads retain additional source precision. Both downloads identify the source report and label the expected-age field as derived. The terminal source row is open-ended: “100 and over.” Its probability of dying is for that remaining interval, not the probability of dying before 101.

How the data were prepared

The National Center for Health Statistics published separate spreadsheets for the total, male, and female tables on August 25, 2026. Life Days Left normalized age, probability of dying, survivors, and remaining life expectancy from Tables 1–3 into one static dataset. Expected attained age and conditional survival are deterministic calculations from those source values; no predictive model is fitted on this page.

The source year stays attached to every result because a period life table can change when mortality conditions change. Read the 2024 release note for the national headline values, or compare this period view with the SSA cohort table by year of birth.
