U.S. life expectancy at birth is about 4,121 weeks
The final CDC 2024 total-population table reports 78.97103 remaining years at birth. Multiplying by 365.2425 days per year and dividing by 7 gives 4,120.51 weeks, displayed as about 4,121 weeks. At age 65, the same table reports 19.66144 remaining years, or about 1,026 weeks.

Convert remaining years to weeks
Select an attained age and source column. Weeks and days are deterministic unit conversions of the published remaining-year value.
Age 65, total population: 1,026 remaining weeks, converted from 19.7 remaining years.
At age 65, the 2024 table’s total population value converts to about 1,026 remaining weeks.

This is not a fixed 4,000-week countdown. It first uses the CDC remaining-life value conditional on reaching the selected age, then changes only the unit.

The displayed years are rounded to one decimal, but the week calculation starts from the source workbook’s more precise e(x) value. Rounding the source first can shift the result by several weeks.
A year is about 52.1775 weeks, not exactly 52
A common shortcut multiplies years by 52. That drops the extra day in an ordinary year and the leap-day pattern. The average Gregorian year is 365.2425 days, so it contains 52.1775 seven-day weeks. On an 80-year span, the exact unit conversion is about 4,174 weeks rather than 4,160.
remaining weeks = CDC e(x) × 365.2425 ÷ 7This convention measures an average-length year. It is appropriate for converting a fractional-year population estimate, but it is not a count of calendar weeks between two named dates.
Why you cannot subtract current age from 79
At-birth life expectancy includes mortality before every later age. Someone who has already reached 65 belongs to a survivor-conditioned group, so the table recalculates from age 65 and reports 19.7 remaining years. Subtracting 65 from the rounded at-birth value of 79 would produce 14 years—about 296 weeks below the actual age-65 table conversion.
The life-expectancy-by-age resource explains survivor conditioning and expected attained age. This page takes those same CDC remaining-year values and changes only their unit.
This is not a fixed 4,000-week life grid
A life-in-weeks grid often asks a reader to assume an 80-year lifespan and mark off time already lived. That can be a useful cultural metaphor, but it is not a life table. This resource starts with the latest final U.S. remaining-life estimate at the selected attained age instead of choosing one fixed horizon for everyone.
“About 4,121 weeks at birth” is a population period estimate. It is not an allotment, deadline, or forecast for a named person.
It is also separate from the site’s daily chart, which uses an income-linked age-40 baseline and an SSA birth-cohort adjustment. Read why remaining life expectancy is not that chart before comparing the two.

The full table converts every CDC exact-age row from 0 through the open-ended 100-and-over interval for total, male, and female source columns. Displayed weeks are rounded to whole numbers. Downloads retain five decimal places, the source remaining-year value, both conversion formulas, and the source report URL.

Use the number as a unit conversion, not a prognosis
Period life expectancy holds 2024 age-specific mortality rates fixed for a hypothetical population. A real person lives through later mortality conditions and has characteristics this table does not know. Converting years to weeks adds no personal information and no extra predictive precision.
