Under final CDC 2024 period rates, 70.1% of the total-population life-table cohort already alive at exact age 65 reaches exact age 80, 30.7% reaches 90, and 2.5% reaches 100. The corresponding male values are 65.3%, 25.1%, and 1.5%; the female values are 74.6%, 35.7%, and 3.4%.

Each bar uses l(target) ÷ l(65) × 100. “Reached” replaces a percentage when the target is not later than the selected age; it is not recoded as a 100% forward-survival probability.

These are conditional period-table percentages for a hypothetical population, not personalized medical or actuarial probabilities. Age 100 means surviving to exact age 100, the start of the source table’s open-ended 100-and-over interval.

The percentage rises with current age because the denominator changes. People represented at age 80 have already survived every mortality risk before 80 in the table. That survivor conditioning does not mean aging itself raises a person’s biological odds; it means the calculation starts from a selected group.

The calculation uses survivors, not remaining years

Each CDC life table begins with 100,000 hypothetical births and publishes l(x), the number still alive at each exact age. For the total-population table, 84,133.281 remain at exact age 65 and 25,811.084 remain at exact age 90. Dividing the second count by the first produces 30.6788%, displayed as 30.7%.

Remaining life expectancy e(x) answers a related but different question: average additional years after age x. The complete table by age owns that measure; this page uses only the survivor column to answer fixed milestone questions.

Reaching 100 means reaching exact age 100

The source’s final row is “100 and over.” Its survivor count is the number reaching exact age 100—the start of that open-ended interval. This page’s 100 result is therefore survival to the 100th birthday, not survival through every year after it.

When a selected age equals or exceeds a target, the interface says “Reached.” It does not turn the result into zero or into a new 100% forward-survival estimate. The question has simply stopped being about a later age.

Total, male, and female are separate source tables

The total-population percentage comes from the total survivor table. It is not an arithmetic average of male and female results. At age 65, survival to 90 is 25.1% in the male table and 35.7% in the female table, while the separately constructed total table gives 30.7%.

National columns hide variation associated with health history and many social conditions, and the report publishes no sex or gender categories beyond male and female. Old-age survivor values also rely on the life table’s Medicare data supplementation and mortality smoothing. They are estimates for a population schedule, not observed frequencies for a completed cohort.

The full matrix applies the same formula to every exact current age from 0 through 100 in the total, male, and female tables. Percentages are displayed to one decimal; downloads retain six decimals and leave later-age fields blank or null after a milestone has already been reached.

Why these are not personal odds

A period life table applies the age-specific mortality rates observed in one calendar year to a hypothetical population. A real person will experience later years, different conditions, and risks the table cannot know. The calculator has no diagnosis, family history, behavior, income, or other individual inputs.

Treat these as transparent population statistics. They are not medical, insurance, retirement, or financial guidance, and they are not the leftover days shown on this site’s separate hybrid timeline.
